Behind the Bar with Jules Fisher- The Dewberry

Jules Fisher has an impressive eight years of bartending experience under her belt. This incredibly talented bartender started her career at Midtown Bar and Grill and three years later, she helped open one of Charleston’s most posh cocktail spots- The Dewberry. Jules was kind enough to take some time out her busy schedule to answer some questions for us. We definitely encourage you to learn a little more about Jules and The Dewberry. Be warned though- you will be dying for one of her famous Mai Tais by the end…

Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Pawleys Island,SC. A very small beach town about an hour north of here.

How long have you been bartending and how long at The Dewberry?
I started my bartending career about 5 years ago at Midtown Bar and Grill. I helped open The Dewberry in 2016 so I’ve been behind the bar here going on 3 years. It’s where I truly fell in love with the craft.

What’s the craziest story a patron has ever told you?
Over the years there’s been too many to count, yet the one that stands out to me the most is a love at first sight story. A couple met when they were 19 years old at a “sockhop”, the gentleman laid eyes on his wife from across the room, asked the lady to dance and they’ve been happily married since. (The craziest stories are from my dive bar days and probably shouldn’t be repeated.)

What’s the strangest drink request you’ve ever received?
A gentleman asked for a burgundy wine glass with vodka, gin, lemon, lime, blue cheese olives, regular olives, cocktail onions and almost every garnish we had on the bar. Oh and with a TON of ice. Can’t say I’d like to try that cocktail.

What’s your favorite drink on the menu?
My favorite cocktail is not a shocking one to those that know me. Our old fashioned is a beautiful timeless cocktail with the right balance of bitters, Demerara, and Woodford Malt Whiskey.

What’s your favorite drink to make?
I love making our Mai Tai. It’s quite the looker with fresh picked flowers from our garden, mint, a dehydrated lime and a Marcona almond shaved on top. Each Mai Tai is the opportunity to deliver a work of art to a patron.

Any other interesting tidbits you would like to include?
What really made me fall in love with bartending besides the inspiring cocktail menu Ryan Casey has created is the team I work with. The Living Room staff is a family that constantly helps eachother grow and always supports one another day in and day out.
