When two bees really love each other, it can get sticky… (talking about honey of course…) Made from fermented honey and water, mead is a deliciously diverse beverage with a never-ending list of possible flavors. It can be a sessionable sipper around 3.5% ABV or a heavy-hitter at over 20% ABV. It can be carbonated, still, naturally sparkling, dry, semi-sweet, or sweet. Going strong since about 1700 BC, it’s clear mead isn’t going anywhere. We’ve picked out some of our favorite bottles we have here in the store. Pick one up next time you’re in!
B Nektar Necromangocon– Aromas of sweet and floral mango, followed by spicy black pepper and a spicy yeast character. Fruity mango wine on the palate backed by citrusy honey brightness. Finishes with lively black pepper. Light carbonation creates a crisp clean feel that washes away quickly. Very drinkable. ($7.99)
B Nektar Zombie Killer- Tart cherry sweetness up front with full, yet crisp fermented cider. Heavy apple skin compliments the cherry. Sweet, creamy honey rounds the flavor and balances the tartness of the cherry. Light carbonation lifts the flavor while the honey smooths the overall mouthfeel. Finishes crisp and clean. ($8.99)
Vikings Blod- A Danish-style mead with aromas of hibiscus and hops. Soft and citrusy on the palate with a hoppy-dry, spicy, and very warming finish. ($34.99)
Chaucer Mead- Made from 100% pure honey from hives throughout Northern California and is composed of a blend of three types; orange, alfalfa and sage. Each of these components brings a unique quality to the blend and contributes to the overall complexity of the wine. Orange adds a pungent orange blossom flavor and has light color. Alfalfa is neutral in flavor but yields a dark, amber color. Sage, on the other hand, has a mild taste and a light color. ($14.99)
